Application: VLC media player
multimedia player and streamer
VLC is the VideoLAN project's highly portable media player for various audio and video formats as well as DVDs, VCDs, and various streaming protocols. It plays MPEG, MPEG2, MPEG4, DivX, MOV, WMV, QuickTime, mp3, Ogg/Vorbis files, DVDs, VCDs, and multimedia streams from various network sources.
VLC can also be used as a streaming server that duplicates the stream it reads and multicasts them through the network to other clients, or serves them through HTTP.
VLC has support for on-the-fly transcoding of audio and video formats, either for broadcasting purposes or for movie format transformations. Support for most output methods is provided by this package, but features can be added by installing additional audio plugins (vlc-plugin-esd, vlc-plugin-sdl, vlc-plugin-arts, vlc-plugin-pulse) or video plugins (vlc-plugin-sdl, vlc-plugin-ggi, vlc-plugin-glide, vlc-plugin-svgalib). There is also a web browser plugin in the mozilla-plugin-vlc package.

VLC is a great media player. It plays virtually anything without the need to install external dependency.
Cherry on the cake, it is written with Qt so it is well integrated in GNOME and KDE.

With smplayer, VLC is the best video player, all systems included. It works on Mac OS X and Windows too, so you probably already know how to use it.

We all think VLC is a great player, but it's bug on ubuntu just sucks. The video output always opens on a separate window, this makes the program loose it's usability appealing.

Best video player available for Linux or any OS in general...
Not completely newbie friendly but in no way a complicated application.
